Stinger from McAfee
Stinger is a standalone tool for
cleaning some of the better known or
newer viruses. It is not ment to be a substitute for your full AV
software. The webpage shows a list of the viruses it will check for and
their variants. You can download Stinger here.
Stinger is a good program to use if your
AV software has been disabled
by a virus. Follow these steps to ensure that you are able to clean
your system. Note: Stinger is small enough to run from a floppy disk if
you choose to do so.
- If you are running Windows XP, you will need to disable system restore. You can do this by going to Start - Settings - Control Panel - System. Click on the system restore tab and then put a check mark in the box next to"Turn Off System Restore". You will be given a warning that all restore points will be deleted, Say ok. You want all restore points to be deleted as a virus may hide here and restore itself when you reboot the computer.
- Next, reboot the computer into safe mode. When the computer reboots and just as Windows begins to start press the F8 key several times to get the boot menu options. Select "Safe Mode" and hit the enter key.
- After the computer finishes booting, go to Start - Run and click the browse button. Locate where you downloaded the file and double click on the Stinger.exe file. At this point you can click on the Preferences button and select what you want the program to scan and do when it finds a virus. After choosing your settings, click the scan now button and let Stinger do it's job.
